As a reader, writer, and researcher today I would describe myself as an improved student, who is still eager to learn more skills, tricks and important rules! I think it is important to write as many things and as much as you can over the course of a year so you don't lose your technique. This has changed a lot since September because when stepped into freshmen year I did not have the drive and ambition to learn more than I already knew. I feel while I am at Gorham High School I will greatly improve my English reading and language skills.
My goals for this year were to write more and learn challenging vocabulary. I could use this while talking and writing to people. I feel like I did accomplish this because over the year, and all of the vocabulary tests we have taken, I was able to incorporate new vocabulary into my writing. This made achieving my goals like killing two birds with one stone. Although on some of the vocabulary quizzes I could have done better, when it came time to work hard for midterms I got a ninety eight percent over the whole vocabulary piece.
I am most proud of the fact that I stuck with working hard, even when I didn't feel like it this semester. I was playing soccer and lacrosse which took up most of my time, meaning less time for test preparation, and most of all homework. Although I wanted to give up I never did making sure to stay on top of my work and learning how to manage my time. Over the year I am most proud of the hard work I put into writing all my quotation analysis, It was much harder then I thought it would be, but doing one each quarter made the last essay much easier. I could find my quotes fast and by myself without help from Mrs. T-F.
My thinking, writing and reading habits deepened over the course of the semester because I was able to take my time with reading and writing. Being rushed at some points gave me the push to finish on time. When the class read Romeo and Juliet I was able to completely understand what they meant even though it wasn't in 'our' language and time frame. Because we took so much time going through each act, writing the final quotation analysis was a piece of cake compared to quarter one.
This year, reading in class on block days and having choice books worked for me this year. I feel like when given the choice, I got to challenge ourselves with the books and genre I wanted to read. What didn't work was the time aspect of everything. I felt rushed when I had to write some of our material, giving me less time to proof read.
This year I believe that I pushed myself to achieve the greatest I could from English 9 advanced. I feel like I read more and read more frequently, helping to improve my vocabulary. I could have pushed myself more to read different genres and authors, other then Nicholas Sparks. I pushed myself in writing because I wanted to be able to gain as much as I could in learning the writing formality.
As a reader I would like to challenge myself with books that have bigger vocabulary that will prepare me for tests in the future such as the SAT's. Next year I would like to read more Non fiction, or historical books to widen my knowledge of different topics. In writing I would like to be able to write in such a way that it does not sound like I am speaking. I would like to learn more skills to help me stop that next year, and I would also like to write more research papers, and do more creative writing.
The reason I picked this piece of writing was because I thought I would portray my sense of improvement with research. When I came into freshmen year I had minimal research techniques. Over the course of third quarter I have improved my research skills to where I felt comfortable taking note cards and writing research papers alone. I loved the topic I chose, which made finding information much faster and more interesting!
There were many reasons why I chose this piece of writing. First off, I wanted to show my growth since the first quotation analysis we did in the beginning of the year. This was one of my better quotation analysis because instead of there being a direct plot you had to dig through the poems to find the information to use. Although Mrs. T-F use many correction marks, it was way less in this QA compared to The Secret Life of Bees quotation analysis. I was able to show that I was beginning to understand the analytical parts of the second and third paragraphs. The Secret life of Bees quotation analysis was one of the very first writing assignments I did in English nine advanced. Let me tell you this was truly terrible. I didn't know how to relate it to my life, I didn't know how to analyze, but most of all my writing skills from the summer had clearly dropped. The reason I put this in here was mainly to show my growth as a reader and writer over the year.
I put this writing piece in here to show, how I did not understand how to fully write a quotation analysis. Reading the book To Kill a Mocking Bird was a hard thing for me. I didn't have the drive and ambition to start and finnish it. This made it hard to remember what I had read. I think that over the last semester I have been able to keep up with the reading and would be able to write a much improved QA if we had to.
The reason I picked my past piece of evidence was because I wanted everyone to see that I am not that great at creative writing. Although I would like to be a great creative writer I was never able to. I (like I said in my dear reader) write like I am talking and it is a hard way to scratch. I would also like to work on this throughout the next 3 years, in Gorham High School.
