Right now they can not afford a better house then the one on Mango Street. There are many times when the first girl of the family, Esperanza, has had to grow up just because of her surroundings, and the experiences she is put through. The author does not blame the young girls for the fact they are getting taken advantage of, but she wants to make sure they are getting the proper information, and facts about sexual abuse.
